The Albert Lea Lakers are proud to announce the signing of Jamell Newson.
Newson, an outfielder, is currently in his junior season at Delta State University. Newson spent his first two collegiate seasons at Northwest Mississippi Community College where he started 45 games in centerfield, hitting .278 with eight doubles, three triples and one home run. He collected 22 RBIs and also scored 39 runs. His speed not only makes him a great defensive player but a threat on the base paths as well, Newson swiped 32 bases in his junior college career.
The young man from Senatobia, Mississippi made an impact right away at NMCC starting 47 of 48 games as a freshman. Although he hit just .259, he led his team with 39 walks and finished with astounding .416 on-base percentage.
Newson was apart of a powerhouse Magnolia Heights program in high school, winning three straight MAIS AAA Division II State Championships from 2012-2014. The Chiefs were the third team in the state of Mississippi to go undefeated, finishing 37-0 and ranked No. 8 in the country in the MaXPreps Xcellent 50 National Baseball Rankings in 2013.
His senior year was one to remember as he was named the MAIS MVP and a member of the Clarion Ledger’s All-State Second-Team. He hit a remarkable .472 with six doubles, six triples and a pair of long balls. Newson drove in 28 runs and also raced away with 35 stolen bases.
Jamell wasn’t too shabby as a junior either, hitting .303 with nine doubles, three triples and a home run. He chipped in 15 RBIs and crossed the plate 27 times. He stole 28 bases and reached base almost every other at bat, posting a .490 on-base percentage.
The Lakes are excited to welcome Jamell to the city of Albert Lea for the upcoming 2017 season!
